University of Derby

Below is a clear summary of what we know about their use of animals in research and how you can take action.

In a recent FOI (September 2025), the University of Derby stated:

‘Please note that ASPA covers any vertebrate other than man but also includes cephalopods.

We keep and experiment on various invertebrates (Crickets, flies, corals and etc), but do not carry out research on vertebrates as covered by ASPA.’

They added:

‘We do keep fish in the aquarium, but these are not used for research. They are sometimes used for behavioural studies by students, but this is not research and the animal’s welfare is not affected in either case.’

What you can do

If you’re concerned about the use of animals in research, you can make your voice heard. Whether you’re a student, member of staff, alumni, or local resident, we’ve created easy-to-use templates to help you contact the university and ask for change.
