Dear [Vice Chancellor of x University],

I was shocked to learn, via Animal Aid’s ‘Universities Challenged’ campaign, that the university is conducting harmful animal experiments. As a student at your university, I am shocked that my tuition fees could be supporting outdated and cruel animal experiments. I feel that the information should be more widely available so that people are aware of what is happening on campus. I would like to meet with the relevant decision-makers at the university, to understand the reasons for the experiments and what work in non-animal new approach methodologies (NAMs) is being conducted.

It is not just people like me who are opposed to animal experiments; leading cancer doctor and Professor of Medicine, Azra Raza states “humans do not benefit but are harmed by misleading animal testing”, especially when it comes to predicting the usefulness of medicines. She asserts that you cannot give a healthy mouse a tumour, treat it with a drug and expect the same results in a human individual, since this kind of thinking has “failed us over and over, not just in cancer”.

Polling in 2021 showed that 65% of those asked want to see plans to phase out animal testing entirely. Universities, as places of learning and scientific exploration, should be leading the way in human-relevant, animal-free science that not only reflects our society’s values but makes use of scientific and technological advances.

Funding and resources would be better invested in the development and application of NAMs that are specific to humans and do not harm animals.

Dear [Vice Chancellor of x University],

I was shocked to learn, via Animal Aid’s ‘Universities Challenged’ campaign, that your university is conducting harmful animal experiments. As someone who lives close to your university/campus, I am shocked that these outdated and cruel experiments are happening on my doorstep.

I feel that the information should be more widely available so that people are aware of what is happening on campus. I would like to meet with the relevant decision-makers at the university, to understand the reasons for the experiments that are being conducted. I would also appreciate knowing what work in non-animal new approach methodologies (NAMs) is being conducted on campus.

Template LTE to send to local press (for residents)

Dear Letters Editor,

As a local resident, I was shocked to discover, through Animal Aid’s ‘Universities Challenged’ campaign, that the University of XXXX is conducting harmful animal experiments on their campus. As a local, I feel that this information should be more widely available so that people are aware of the cruelty happening in our town/city. As well as being cruel, there is mounting scientific evidence of how unreliable animal experiments are.
